Custom or Prefab?-That is the Kitchen Cabinet Question

icoPosted by: admin  :  Category: Small Kitchen Design

So you’ve decided that new kitchen cabinets are in order. Now the question remains: Do you go the slow and more expensive route with custom cabinets or opt for the quicker and less costly alternative with prefabricated cabinets? Both choices present various pros and cons, so you’ll want to do your homework before making a final decision. If quality and craftsmanship are your top priority, a kitchen design expert may be steering you toward custom kitchen cabinets. But those on a limited budget will be happy to learn that prefabricated cabinets from a reputable cabinetry manufacturer can almost match their more expensive counterparts on both counts.

If you’re still wavering, it’s no wonder. So here are some important considerations that can help make the custom versus prefabricated kitchen cabinets decision an easier one.

1. In terms of cost, a comparison is necessary. That’s because just like custom cabinetry, prefabricated cabinets run the gamut from modular to high end. And on that high end, in a perfect example of ‘you get what you pay for,’ you may run into prefabricated kitchen cabinets that are as expensive as some custom cabinets. Quality and cost should be a tag team when conducting kitchen cabinet price comparisons.

2. If you’re in a rush, no doubt about it, prefabricated kitchen cabinets will save you time. In fact, if you want custom kitchen cabinets, expect to wait one to two months for delivery.

3. If you want a style that’s custom designed or your kitchen cabinet setup requires odd or unique sizes, then custom cabinetry may be necessary. However, you might be surprised by the wide array of prefabricated kitchen cabinet styles out there. A broad and varied selection of kitchen cabinets can be found at you nearest home design center.

4. When it comes to kitchen cabinet finishes, your options are nearly as wide as those for custom kitchen cabinets. Whether it’s a clean white, a natural wood, a glossy rich brown or a homey burgundy finish you’re seeking, a leading prefabricated cabinetry manufacturer can likely fill the bill.

5. Because they can vary so widely between and even among custom and prefabricated kitchen cabinets, the material, joinery, hinges and pulls of the doors should be carefully examined and compared for quality and craftsmanship.

6. With custom cabinetry, especially if your kitchen has odd sizes and unique angles, you’re probably going to have to pay for professional installation. If you’re somewhat handy in the carpentry department, however, you may be able to bypass this added expense with prefabricated kitchen cabinets and install them yourself.

7. Last but certainly not least, the reputation of the cabinetmaker is critical. For custom cabinetry, consult your local chamber of commerce and ask for referrals. Your best bet is word of mouth. If you’ve decided to go with prefabricated kitchen cabinets, look for a leading manufacturer that prides itself on quality, value and service. A few ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinet manufacturers recognize that high quality can-and should-go with affordable pricing. To that end, look for a kitchen cabinet line that offers lifetime warranties, is retailed at popular prices and can be assembled quickly.

The Halloween Trail of Terror

icoPosted by: admin  :  Category: Kitchen Remodel Ideas

Another delightful Halloween party is a progressive Halloween party. The advantage of the house-to-house party is that youngsters can be out of doors part of the time which gives them active exercise that fulfills yearnings for a rip-roaring good time. Tip a tip on how to make this party success.

The young guests may be asked to come, masked, to Pumpkin-Face Inn. The address must be that of the first house on the trail. The guests upon their arrival are given a small sack of buttered corn and four crackers. Here each guest submits to the “Ghost Test” which consists of eating the four crackers and then whistling. Try it sometime and see what a feat it is. The first successful whistler is given a lollypop.

The group is then told that there are paper pumpkins hidden throughout the house. The guests are divided into four groups, each with a leader. Each leader is provided with a string on which to put the paper pumpkins when found. Each group chooses a signal such as barking, meowing or crowing. No one except the leader is allowed to pick up a pumpkin. When one of the others finds a pumpkin he places his finger on it and barks or meows or does whatever his group is supposed to do until the leader comes to pick it up. The group, whose leader has the longest string of pumpkins, wins. This game is very hilarious and youngsters love the noise that they can make while playing it.

The party then proceeds to the second house which is completely dark. An adult ghost (or two) accompanies the group from house to house. The second place is called Haunted House. The leader raps on the door three times; a ghost opens the door and instructs the guests to form a lock-step line and to follow him. Amid shrieks and groans the guests are led through the house and finally into a dimly lit room and told a ghost story.

After the ghost story the youngsters are provided with paper sacks, crayons and scissors with which to construct a mask. The best one is chosen by popular applause and the winner awarded a prize. Each youngster is then given a pocketful of peanuts and they all proceed to Witch’s Cavern.

Here there is an old witch with a cauldron full of cookies and fortunes. The children are greatly delighted with the fortunes given them by the witch. They are then conducted to the kitchen of the home. Here apples bob in a tub full of water. Each child tries his luck at bobbing for apples. An apple is the reward for the guest who is able to rescue an apple from the water with his teeth. The one or two unsuccessful youngsters are then given apples before they proceed to the next house.

The Hideout is the last of the four houses. At the Hide-out the guests are seated on the floor with a bowl of slippery pumpkin seeds in the center. Each child is given a needle and thread. At a given signal the children all begin to string the slippery pumpkin seeds. At the end of ten minutes a prize is given the youngster with the most seeds on his string.

Then the children are presented with a ball of Witch’s Yarn. The first child unwinds the ball until he finds a slip of paper with his fortune on it. He then throws the ball to another child who unwinds until he finds his fortune, etc. Enough fortunes have been tied in the ball of yarn so that each guest will receive one.

The children are then served Halloween Sundaes. Halloween Sundaes are orange ice cream over which chocolate syrup is poured, topped off with imitation black spiders and chopped nuts.

The youngsters thoroughly enjoy this Halloween “Trail of Terror” party. Best of all it is not a great deal of work or expense for any one family, for the four families in the neighborhood who give the party share the work and expense. Perhaps you’d like to try this plan in your neighborhood.

How to Design a Victorian Bathroom

icoPosted by: admin  :  Category: Kitchen Design Ideas

A popular idea for many homeowners these days is to take on home improvement projects to make their homes a little nicer rather than relocating to a newer house. Many homeowners like to go with a theme for rooms when they are remodeling, such as a Victorian bathroom or a 1950’s kitchen. If you are thinking of going with that old fashioned clawfoot tub bathroom idea, here are a couple ideas to create a wash room that takes you back to another time.

1.  Get a new bathroom vanity that reflects the period. If you have a modern bathroom vanity with Victorian accents and decorations, it won’t really work. You need to complete the transformation with a bathroom vanity that has an antique style, like a raised white porcelain sink with a rich mahogany cabinet base. The bathroom vanity is one of 3 major bathroom fixtures that decide the décor of the room, so find an antique vanity that you love and match your toilet and bathtub with it to completely makeover your modern bathroom.

2.  Find a fitting footed bath tub. The first thing you want to do with any bathroom remodel is measure your space so you know what will fit. Once you know the vanity that will fit in your space, you can move onto the next important fixture, the bathtub. To make your Victorian bathroom authentic, you will want to find a beautiful footed bath tub to bathe in. Clawfoot tubs are a charming and beautiful part of any old-fashioned bathroom, and you will love the way it starts to bring your design idea to life.

3.  Get an old fashioned style toilet. Because of the demand, many manufacturers still produce Victorian style toilets, which are generally designed with a high tank and a pull chain with a decorative accent on the end. There are low tank Victorian toilets as well if that is more your taste, but no matter which one you choose, the old fashioned style toilet will give you the bathroom fixture design tri-fecta that really takes you back in time and transforms your modern bathroom into an old fashioned one, with a beautiful antique bathtub centerpiece.

Once you have the three matching major fixtures installed, you only need to worry about the details. You can paint or put up that flowery old fashioned wallpaper, and invest in a few accents that complete the Victorian look. Good luck!

Back Pain Exercise: Natural Pain Relief

icoPosted by: admin  :  Category: Kitchen Remodel Ideas

Your back, just like the rest of your body, needs regular exercise to be healthy and strong. It needs a regular fitness regimen to keep it performing at peak efficiency.

Back pain exercise involves exercise of not only your back muscles, but also of those that support your back. The abdomen and thigh muscles are in the second group. You will want to exercise both groups to avoid or alleviate back pain. You may also want to add healthful fish oils to your daily diet to lubricate your joints. This is especially important as you age, since aging joints become more susceptible to painful problems.

Back Pain Exercise You Can Do At Home

A good physiotherapist or chiropractor will be able to teach you many useful exercises for reducing back pain, but these five will get you started.

1. Back, hip, and leg muscles. Stand with your back against a wall. Place your feet shoulder-width apart, your hands on your hips. Inhale and exhale deeply and evenly as you gently slide your back down the wall until your knees are at an angle of about 90 degrees. Count to five, and then gently and slowly slide back to your original position. Repeat five times. This will stretch and strengthen important back, hip, and leg muscles.

2. Abdomen muscles. Lie on your back on the floor. Firmly place your feet flat on the floor. Your knees should be bent and raised toward the ceiling. Lean forward until your head and shoulders leave the floor, trying to touch your knees with both hands. Hold the position as you count to 10. Relax and repeat 5 times. This will strengthen the abdominal muscles that help support your back.

3. Back muscles. Stand with hands on hips, feet slightly apart. Move your hand backward onto the small of your back. Keep your knees straight. Gently bend backwards at the waist as far as you can. Be careful not to bend so far that you increase your back pain. Hold the bend for 2 to 3 seconds. Return to your normal position. This back pain exercise will strengthen the muscles in your back itself. It will also loosen tight back muscles.

4. Hip and back muscles. Use a straight back kitchen or dining chair for this exercise. Stand behind the chair, holding the chair back with both hands. Lift one leg up and back, keeping its knee straight. Return it slowly to position, and lift the other leg up and back in the same way. Repeat 5 times with each leg. This exercise will strengthen hip muscles that support your back, as well as the back muscles themselves.

5. Back and hip muscles. You may want a mat under you for this one. Lying face down on the floor, tighten the muscles in one leg and raise it from the floor. Hold the leg up while you count to ten, and then lower it slowly to the floor. Lift the other leg, count to 10, and lower it slowly to the floor. Repeat 5 times with each leg to give added strength to your back muscles and the hip muscles that support them.

CAUTION: Back Pain Exercise Demands Warm-up!

You’ve heard it before, but this word of caution is important. Before beginning your back pain exercise, talk to your physician about what you plan to do. You may want to show these exercises to him or her and get advice. Then set aside time to exercise regularly, at least every other day.

Back pain exercise demands warm-up, so schedule at least five minutes at the start of your exercise period for that. Warming up lowers blood pressure, improves blood flow to the heart, increases muscle temperature and makes muscles more pliable. Warm up with some type of slow, rhythmic movement. Walking is a good warm-up for your back pain exercises. Use an easy walking pace, inhaling and exhaling evenly and deeply to send oxygen to your muscles.

Back pain exercise has benefits for the rest of your body also. Think of your back as the main core of a healthy body. By giving it simple, low impact exercise each day or every other day, you will strengthen your muscles, preparing them to protect and support the painful area throughout the day.

Get Even More Help for Back Pain

While back pain exercise is a long-term solution to your back pain, you want to reduce your pain right now. You don’t want to wait. You want treatments that will give relief while you make muscles stronger.
