Best heating options for an old house without ducts or a conventional heater.?

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: Kitchen Cabinets Design

My mother lives in a very old home in Buffalo NY. It’s about a 1000 SQFT, with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 laundry room and living room and kitchen. The only heating sources are an old gas burning stove in the living room and a very old oven with vents on the side designed to be a heater. I’m planning on replacing the oven with a new one in a few weeks. Since modern ovens aren’t designed to heat rooms, I need to figure out a good alternative to heat the house.

There is very little insulation in the house so it get extremely cold during the winter. Are there any space heaters that won’t burn out while heating several rooms during a cold Buffalo winter, possibly running continuously? I’ve seen large units that mount on the wall in Japan, but I can’t find anything similar online and I’m afraid of smaller units burning out their motor. Or are there any other suggestions to keep the house warm?
Thanks!
I’m hoping to find a solution for a few hundred dollars, otherwise, I won’t be able to replace her oven.

Gas heat is the way to go. It is cheap, efficient and produces fast heat. There are several different models to choose from. I had no complaints with my Vanguard 3 brick infrared heater.

no water pressure in kitchen sink?

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: Kitchen Remodel Ideas

I have no water pressure in my kitchen sink (hot or cold). my bath room sink and bathtub (2nd floor) have normal pressure as dose my washing machine (1st floor). What could be the issue? I removed that aerator, and the issue seems to be that the water flow out of the faucet is very slow. I also checked the valves under neath the sink and the are turned on. Other background info, we were experiencing low water pressure on and off for about a month, now it is always low.

I’m guessing this is a single-lever faucet? You’ve got a clogged cartridge. Depending on the brand/model, some can be dissasembeled and cleaned, while others need to be replaced (the cartridge, not the faucet :)

Major Kitchen Appliances: Ranges, Cook-tops and Ovens

How to Choose the Perfect Cooking Range?

For some people, cooking is more than a hobby, it is therapeutic. Not only can cooking calm the nerves, but it is also a great way to bring the family together. Many times, some of the best and most memorable memories are from time spent in the kitchen as a family. The key is to select the finest kitchen appliances as they will be used daily.

In addition, regularly cooking meals as opposed to always dining out can save you a tremendous amount of money. Not only is cooking at home budget friendly, it allows you to be able to control your diet because you know exactly what you are putting into your body.

Sometimes, people have fully functional kitchens, but because of their impractical or outdated major kitchen appliances, they would rather throw away money on take out than spend extra time in the kitchen. In order to truly customize your kitchen appliances, you should consider what types of appliances will best suit the needs of you and your family.

One of the most used major kitchen appliances is the kitchen range. While some people prefer to use a gas stove, others cannot imagine life without their electric, glass top range.

Many people worry that since most flat top range manufacturers suggest that you cook on their ranges using pans that are perfectly flat on the bottom, they will have to buy all new pots and pans just to have an electric cook top. However, by choosing an electric range with coil; you will have the benefits of an electric range without the burden of buy new pans.

Although large, gas ranges are traditionally considered to be “industrial”; gas cook tops are becoming common in newer kitchens. If you aren’t sure what type of range to choose, a dual power range allows you to have the best of both worlds.

While many people prefer to have traditional ranges that you can slide in to a space between the counter tops, others prefer to customize their kitchen by purchasing a free standing range.

You should also decide if you want the cook top to be separate from the oven. It is a good idea to take a look at several options before making your final decision.

Although grilling is usually thought to be an outdoor activity, it is common for people to have grilling stations installed on their cook tops so that they can grill anytime they want.

Another popular major kitchen appliance that is making its way into many kitchens is the convection oven. Convection ovens are usually used in professional kitchens, but many households benefit from them because they actually cook food more quickly and evenly than traditional ovens.

Since healthy cooking is important to so many people, microwave ovens are becoming more of a prop as opposed to an actual usable kitchen appliance. You will usually find a microwave in just about every kitchen, but most of the cooking is now done on the range.

In order to keep your stove looking new, it is important to find an oven that you can either clean regularly, or one that will clean itself. This will allow you to always have a sparkling oven.

Kitchen appliances are the most important component of the perfect kitchen renovation.

Has anyone any idea how to start a kitchen design service?

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: Kitchen Design Ideas

I am an experienced kitchen designer with many years in the kitchen industry. I see a lot of poorly planned kitchens by well known names.I think there is a gap in the market for supplying floor plans, of a very high standard. Can anyone advise me as to how I can get this off the ground. Many thanks!
MikeP

The most difficult thing is getting customers.

What about Google ads. You pay per click, so only pay for hits to your website. You could gear the ad to come up when people Google things like:
homebase kitchens
b&q kitchens
kitchen design service

This way you can nab customers who never thought of you, as well as those looking for an actual bespoke design service.

Should I remove a bedroom (walls) to make an open concept design in my home?

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: Small Kitchen Design

I am buying a small two story house with 4 small bedrooms and 1.1 baths (1480 SF). The living room and eat-in-kitchen (no dining room) are very small as well. There is a bedroom between my kitchen and living room. I want to remove the walls of the bedroom so I can expand the small kitchen, add a space for an actual dining table and visually bigger living room. Do you think this would look okay? Also I know reducing my bedroom count may affect the resale value. The design of my current house is below. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Here is a link to the schematic of my first floor. Thanks in advance for your help!

1st floor

I forgot to mention that my house faces north so I get little sun light in my kitchen. I think removing the walls may also provide better lighting in the kitchen.
John- thank you for your input. I intend on hiring a structural engineer to find out if they are load bearing or not. My home inspector (with 20+years experience as a home contractor) said he did not think it was load bearing based on the shape of the house (A-frame, I think he mentioned), the fact that it is a brick house and from what he can tell based on the joists in the crawl space. So I am hoping he is correct.
Thank you all for your great ideas.

My normal family size includes my one-year old son, hubby and myself. Currently, I am housing two family members. My mother is one of them and it looks like she may become a permanent house guest. So considering those factors, I will need to keep at least three bedrooms.

Your total square footage will depict the resale. There is no concern for you making this alteration..You didn’t mention your family size. Any alterations you make can be unmade by the next person you need to make this comfortable for you.

If you are single I would alter it further by extending the kitchen into the center bedroom and making the master bedroom the living room. The 2 bedrooms upstairs would be my sleeping and dressing quarters. The new living and dining room can be transitioned with pocket doors allowing you to transform the space for overnight guests.

** I’m an architectural engineer – the center bedroom, I can almost guarantee, is not load bearing. Your concerns here would be not taking the wall down but properly transitioning the floor. I would further suggest that you eliminate the living room rear exit and create a double wide opening on the hall side of the new dining room.
