Kitchen Renovation Project: Day Four Electrical Re-Wiring and Ikea Delivery

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: kitchen renovation

http://www.andrewseltz.com

My New York City apartment is getting a badly needed kitchen renovation. I’ve torn out the old cabinets and appliances and will be replacing them with cabinets, counters, refrigerator and a sink from Ikea along with a new stove, microwave range hood, and a dishwasher from Sears. But, today was electrician day and they came to replace the fuse panel and completely rewire the kitchen space.

This wave of the project is focused on the basics and the electrical work. Later I want to dress things up with a tile backsplash, a new floor, and some under-cabinet task lighting.

Day four was focused on getting the electrical work done. The electricians were extremely efficient and got the entire kitchen rewired in less than 1 day. The new breaker box is installed and all the outlets are in place. Once I finish repairing the walls, they’ll come back and hookup the outlets and put on the covers.

Ikea also delivered the cabinets and sink today. It’s very important to do a complete inventory when you get your order to ensure that you have all of the parts and don’t find yourself in the middle of an installation and missing something important. Our order checked out 100% – very happy about that.

Finally, I also went to the building supply company around the corner and ordered the materials for closing up the walls. It gets delivered tomorrow. While I was there, I picked up the parts to hook-up the ice maker’s water supply line.

When the electricians left I hooked up the water supply line to the main water connection and tested for leaks by running some water into a bucket. No leaks! Everything looks good.

Does anyone have a recipe for prime rib for the kitchen impaired? (Trying to) serve 4 people?

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: Kitchen Remodel Ideas

What I mean by "kitchen impaired" is I’m like Charlie Brown ("all I know how to cook is toast and maybe popcorn"…) I’ll bet you I could burn water!! I’m looking to serve 4 people and all the recipes I found were for 10+ people (and they all contradicted each other-cover or don’t cover, high heat or low heat etc)

PLEASE HELP!! I’ll trade info on how to care for cats….

Here’s THE BEST suggestion I can offer:
Choose one or the other of those conflicting recipes and go with it.

A] IF you have to buy the whole rib roast [I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to ask the persons working in the meat departmetn if they will split the prime rib and make almost the size portion you need.]
B] Ask the persons if they will "bone it" – remove the bones for you, making it a boneless rib roast. You’ll be charged for the bones. Take them with you. Ask another Q how to prepare them.
C] Make the investment in a meat thermometer. Its a great tool to have in the kitchen.
D] Before putting the roast in the oven, make sure the meat thermometer is in the thickes part of roast. You’ll get a better reading as to the desired doneness or degree of cooking you’re looking for.
ALSO so you can easily see the thermometer when you open the oven.

IF you prefer eating well-done meat, rib roast is a total waste of your hard-earned money.
Rib roast should be at medium or rarer.

If you prefer medium-well or well-done meat, I suggest flank steak or London broil.

Whichever one you prefer, after removing the roast from the oven, before carving, make sure you allow the roast to rest for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute through the roast AND the roast will relax, makng it easier to carve.

Being the novice you are, I suggest asking the folks in the meat department how to properly carve the roast. Its worth asking someone in-person who KNOWS HOW.

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

VTY,
Ron Berue
Yes, that is my real last name!

btw, I’m allergic to cats. No pets at all – except the Goddess – the lady I’m currently dating!

Does Anyone Know of a Good Restaurant Game?

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: Kitchen Cabinets Design

Does anyone know of a game, either online or downloadable, that is sort of like The Sims, restaurant style? I’ve been playing Cafe World on Facebook and am looking for a game sort of like it…

Basically, I’d want to be able to do the following:
Design the restaurant
Design the clothing for chefs, waiters, hosts, etc
Plan the meals
Assist in the cooking
Run the restaurant
Advertise
Blah, blah, blah

So, actually a combination of The Sims, Cafe World, Rollercoaster Tycoon, and the final challenge in Hell’s Kitchen, hahaa.

Any ideas? Random, I know!

Well..there’s Diner Dash. That’s for PC and PS3. You seat people at tables, take their orders, serve them, get their checks and clean the tables. It’s very repetitive but addictive.

Then for Wii there’s Order up where you make the food for people, and there are a few Cooking Mama games for Wii, iphone and DS.

That’s all I can think of.

What kind of bench-top for a kitchen renovation?

icoPosted by: Edit Kasza  :  Category: kitchen renovation

I’m doing a graphics assignment and i need your help! can someone tell me and give me information about a really good bench-top material (e.g. granite, timber) and how cheap it is (need cost per segment if possible)
thanks !

Well that depends on what type of sink you are going to fit in the worktop. If you want a standard inset or a belfast sink you are better off going for wood preferably beech,or if you prefer an under mounted sink you’d be better suited to a granite worktop. As for cost’s, wood will be considerably cheaper than granite. The average cost for granite (2500×620x30) is approx £350 + vat, but you have to keep in mind that granite has to be specialist cut so there’s very little room for errors, whereas a wooden top with an average cost of £175 + vat of similar size can be cut on site to suit.
