My kitchen is 3.35 x 1.90 meters large. Kinda like a rectangle with a single window on one of the short sides.
I found some tiles that are approx. 20×30 cm large. One kind is white and the other is dark grey-violet with a glamour small stylized flowers design.
Since they are so contrasting and since the kitchen is small I imagine I’ll use the dark ones as an accent. I want to use tiles all the way up to the ceiling, not half. Also I hate checker designs and I d
Can you please give me an idea how I should set those tiles, so they look good? I’m afraid if I use the wrong setting it will be overwhelming.
Also – what color should I use for floor tiles to match?
I’d also appreciate advice on furniture color – I was thinking of using a counter imitating wood, since I hate granite imitations.
I also made a drawing to help you better understand – sorry it’s so bad but I did it in Paint.

Sorry… Ignore the "and I d" forgot to delete that
Hi Lauren thanks for your answer and explanations, however I didn’t quite understand what you mean by east west rows – I’m not sure if it’s my English or my lack of knowledge about interior design. Did you mean I set them up like bricks? Also, did you mean I make 1/3 purple, 2/3 white, or did you mean I try a "gradient effect" with those tiles?
Could you do something like this, in which you create something like an elliptical pattern with the purple tiles? You could also do the same thing with squares, triangles, whatever you like. Lay them like this where W=White and P=purple:
w w w w w w w w w w w w w
w w w w w p p p p p w w w w
w w w w p p w w w p p w w w
w w w p p p w w w p p p w w
w w w p p p w w w p p p w w
w w w w p p w w w p p w w w
w w w w w p w w w p w w w w
w w w w w w p p p p w w w w w
If you don’t like this, you could create a wave pattern:
w w w w w w w w
w p w w w w w p
p w p w w w p w p
p w w p w p w w w
w w w w p w w w w
You can pretty much go with any color cabinet and flooring. I would lean toward a darker cabinet if the counter top will imitate wood (usually these are lighter wood). Regardless, contrast the two. If the counter top is light, go with dark cabinets and then lighten up again for the floor.
You got great advice above, that you lay the tiles out on the floor or counter top first to play with the pattern and placement. Once you’ve found a design you like, then lay the tile.

I am moving into a studio apartment with my partner. The room apartment is tiny (16×11 feet or 5×3.3 meters) – that’s excluding the little hallway, bathroom and kitchen. Since it’s quite tricky to furnish I am looking for blog sites or just websites *specifically* on furnishing small spaces. Please don’t give me links to websites with concept ideas of space saving furniture that doesn’t exist or interiors that look like they’re from The Jetsons
The flat is in a Victorian style with wooden beams on the ceiling and a little bay window so ultra modern will just look odd. So if anyone knows where I can find good small space interior design ideas please let me know, you’d pretty much save my life. Alternatively, if you are a budding interior designer and would like to give me some ideas (free of charge
) I could send you the layout of the flat and you could knock yourself out with some furniture arrangement concepts!

CHICAGO — August 16, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today visited a design company in Chicago to encourage small businesses in Illinois to take advantage of the state’s small business tax credit. Small businesses that create new jobs between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 may be able to take advantage of a $2,500 tax credit for new hires. The Illinois Small Business Job Creation Tax Credit, proposed and signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn earlier this year, targets the foundation of Illinois’ economy — the 500,000 small businesses across the state.
“By offering a tax credit, businesses thinking of adding new employees will have an incentive to hire now and expand,” said Governor Quinn. “This is an innovative way to put thousands of people to work throughout Illinois. We must continue to do everything we can to create jobs and grow our economy.”
The $2,500 tax credit is available to businesses with 50 or fewer employees (including all locations) as of June 30, 2010. Ninety-five percent of Illinois businesses have fewer than 50 employees. New small businesses hiring their first Illinois employee(s) may also qualify for the credit. Those businesses that began hiring on July 1 may apply for the credit retroactively.
“The small business tax credit was a great incentive for our company in adding another full time designer to our staff,” said Mick De Giulio, President of de Giulio Kitchen Design. “In these tough economic times we appreciate every opportunity to help our business grow.”
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity created a simple, easy-to-use online registration system for small business owners at JobsTaxCredit.illinois.gov. Eligible companies should register new positions online as soon as a new, full-time Illinois employee is hired and begins providing services. After one year, companies can use the website to enter substantiating data and apply for their tax credit certificate. Tax credit certificates will be awarded beginning July 1, 2011. The total amount of credits issued is capped at $50 million, which will support 20,000 jobs.
Senate Bill 1578, sponsored by Sen. Michael Noland (D-Elgin) and Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), passed the General Assembly unanimously.
For eligibility requirements for the Illinois Small Business Job Creation Tax Credit, and to register a new position, visit JobsTaxCredit.illinois.gov.
Illinois has added nearly 60,000 jobs in 2010 — more new jobs than any other Midwest state.

I have a small kitchen that I want to remodel. I like the look of the black granite floor tiles and I also like the black granite counter tops. If I were to do both in the black granite, would this look bad? I have never seen it done so I thought maybe it was a design faux pas.
I recently had this dilemma with a client- its what she requested and as a designer i had to steer her in a different direction. We resolved it by using the black granite counter tops and a wood floor with a black granite floor in the adjacent hallway-it turned out beautiful .maybe something like this can work for you. another suggestion is to alternate black and alternate color to make a check floor-or to put in an alternate color to make a border pattern with the black-or even vise-versa
